Holi is one of the most celebrated festivals of India with a great significance. Not only does it mark the onset of the new beginnings but is also an onset of spring season in the Indian subcontinent. People celebrate this festival with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm. There are many ways in which we could celebrate Holi whether it is by sharing delicacies or by applying colors, the spirit of the festival generally remains very high and euphoric.

However, living in shared housing communities it is extremely important to be mindful of how others feel about celebrating a festival in a certain way. Everyone has their own way of celebrating the festivals. Some like to celebrate it within a large group and love to organize parties while others like to celebrate it in the company of their loved ones. Some people are also allergic to certain colors that are used while playing Holi. Therefore, it is important to keep certain things in mind while celebrating this beautiful festival without becoming a cause of stress for people around us.

Here are some simple do’s and don’ts of celebrating Holi in the apartment complexes

Do: Use all natural colors and powders made from flowers extracts

Don’t: Use chemical colors, powders which are harmful for the environment and skin

Do: Use water judiciously as it is a very valuable yet scarce resource. As much as possible avoid using it. Set a limit for the members for the usage of water during Holi

Don’t: Use dirty water or excess water just because it is a shared water tank. Be mindful of the nature and the needs of others

Do: Keep your car windows closed while driving around the apartment complex or designated area for playing holi

Don’t: Pour water, water balloons on people driving their vehicles as this could be detrimental and can lead to accidents

Do: Designate a place within an apartment complex for the residents to play Holi. This way the entire residential society will not become dirty and the walls and vehicles of other residents will remain clean

Don’t: Pour colors on the plants, lifts, staircases, lobbies, undesignated areas, infrastructure facilities, common amenities, vehicles and pets of other members.

Do: Share stories with your children on the importance of celebrating this festival

Don’t: Don’t take things to heart if children go overboard. Remember we were all kids once and this is a festival of joy

Do: Share sweets and savories with your loved ones, neighbors, kids and everyone around

Don’t: Force people to consume alcohol or any other intoxicating substances even if customary as this could create problem for them

Do: Apply oil on your skin and hair before playing so that the color will not stick to your skin and it would be easier to remove it

Don’t: Force people to play with colors. Respect their choice of not using them for any reason.

Do: Check on senior citizens living alone and engage them in the festivities

Don’t: Force senior citizens to partake in celebration using colors or waters if they do not wish to be part of it.

Do: Thank people who take care of our daily needs like watchmen, security guards, domestic help, society management staff etc.

Don’t: Pour color on them while they are on work or exclude them from festivities.

We hope that the above mentioned tips will help you enjoy this festival of joy and colors with your loved ones with all the more vigor keeping in mind the needs of other residents.
