Ordering out and getting food delivered at your footstep has become a significant part of our lives especially during pandemic when going out to eat was no more an option. Many food delivery businesses thrived during this phase and also introduced various kinds of safety measures in order to get more and more orders. Whether it was zero contact delivery by Dominos or safety options taken by Swiggy, Zomato or other food delivery partners, we saw different initiatives by food delivery partners in order to ensure food safety.

If experts are to be believed the pandemic is here to stay for a long period of time in form of some variant or other. Therefore, time has come for housing societies and residential complexes and apartments to consider managing food deliveries with more efficiency and convenience making safety a big priority. Here are a few ideas that housing societies’ can implement in order to better manage the food deliveries:

1)    Facilitate contactless entry to the building– Yes! This is one of the things that need to be done as soon as possible as the delivery partner no matter how much precaution they take but if they cannot get contactless entry it is futile to maintain any kind of precautions. Smart gadgets are can be used in order to achieve this. Smart cameras are needed through which the resident and the security can see the food delivery partner and grant access through smart phones.

2)    Designate a contact less food drop off zone– During peak hours the lobbies become crowded and something that need to be avoided. The members can designate a particular area for food drop off going with the aesthetics of the lobby. A staff member can design and decorate a part of the lobby which clearly indicates to the delivery partner that it is a food drop off zone and therefore avoids overcrowding by the delivery partners.

3)    Make residents aware of the new changes– Once the process in place the management committee needs to inform the residents about the new changes in the food delivery management. The same can be done using signage, emails, banners, or notice boards. The residents will only follow it if they are aware of the system and also how to properly use the same. They should be made aware of the smart tools that they can use to allow contactless entry as well as the food drop off zone.

4)    Encouraging resident to leave notes while ordering food– Ask the residents to leave notes to the delivery partner while ordering food and inform them about the food drop off zones and systems. This will ensure confusion free smooth delivery of the operation.

5)    Partner with restaurants and have your own delivery network– Although the delivery is majorly dominated by big companies like Swiggy and Zomato but there is also a lot of confusion and chaos which comes with such giants managing the delivery operations. Go one step ahead and partner with local restaurants and have your own food delivery system in place. This would ensure better operational efficiency

Changing with the times is important and therefore we hope that next time your housing society is thinking of changing the way it manages food deliveries you will consider these points.
