Since past few years the role of RWAs in improving the quality of life at community level whether it is apartments, colonies or gated communities has been growing day by day. It is a well-known fact that the communities where the interests of the members are well cared for enjoy a better life and lesser grievances, than those that are dependent totally on Government only.

For several years women have played a very crucial role in shaping our social fabric and in setting a different tone for the way the affairs are handled from time to time. Whether it is managing big corporate giants or showing entrepreneurial skills in their own businesses women have led by an example. So it is about time that they take up more spaces in managing housing societies and in providing a different perspective to this field of management.

For the past few years we have witnessed a surge in women’s participation in the management of RWAs or housing societies. Whether it is planning and administration and taking up local level improvements women have proved their metal in everything they undertake. However, there is a need for women to take up more spaces and be more active in the management of housing societies and RWAs. Following are the domains in which women can show more participation.

1. Formulation of ground rules for maintenance and future improvements – Laying down rules for maintenance is very crucial for the smooth functioning of the housing society. Women can either use their own legal expertise or involve legal experts for doing the same. This will also enable them to understand their scope of work.

2. Ensuring inclusivity in the use of common amenities – Being empathetic towards others and having high emotional intelligence, women can ensure that all the members of the housing society enjoy the amenities equally. They can bring about changes in the layout which encourage inclusivity.

3. Plans and approvals for the apartment complexes or layout – Being aware of the bye-laws,  ratios of built up and open spaces, common facilities required and their features like water harvesting, parking etc would help women in managing housing societies better and in providing resourceful solutions.

4. Management of facilities – Active and proactive participation is required in management of housing facilities and in determining who will be responsible for what. Women with their ability to plan and multitask can provide out of the box solutions to the problems.

5. Participation in the meetings/group discussions- By showing their presence in the meetings and group discussions women can remain abreast of the latest developments in the communities and in understanding the needs of the residents well. This will also help them to connect with residents and come up with better solutions.

6. Documentation and paperwork- Creating a ready reference of the area or housing society, demographics, directory of phone numbers of members and proper documentation of grievance management is very crucial.

7. Organizing community service events – A major role can be played by women here by organizing events that create awareness among the residents as we all bind them together to a common cause. They could partner with local charities and government agencies in order to organize events that help in increasing the overall conscientiousness of the society. It will also help in strengthening the bond between the members of the residential societies. They could also play a very active role in spreading awareness and making robust decisions which help in saving crucial natural resources.

Successful group living is one of the biggest challenges that we are facing today as a society. Women today are qualified, confident and have the aptitude to make huge contributions in this domain as they have been doing in other spheres of lives. The multifaceted nature of RWA management calls for participation of both men and women especially women.  We this we hope that every year the number of women participating in different spheres of RWA management increases and leaves a positive impact on the overall management of the housing facilities. They will definitely set a benchmark and inspire others to excel and match the quality of their contribution in improving the quality of lives of the members of the housing societies.
